The trans on these cars heat up very fast and very hot. What type of fluid
did you use when you flushed it? The '97's use Mercon, I believe. The
flashing OD light is usually an over-temp indicator.

Subject: Impending Tranny Problem ??

Here's a question for the masses....

I purchased my SHO last Feb (75,000 miles), and pulled my boat (16 1/2 ft
Sea Nymph) on Interstate 81 (65 mph - OD off) to my cabin in NY (3 1/2 hr
ride) 3 or 4 times last lummer without issue.
Last fall I suffered from the dreaded cam failure.
The cams were welded, and both heads were re-done.
About a month ago, I did the fluid & filter change on the tranny (probably
never done before).
Last Friday night, I was pulling the boat to NY again, and the OD light
started flashing about an hour into the ride.
I pulled off at the 1st exit, and let it cool down....and decided to try
again.
About 10 miles down the road, the OD light started flashing again, and smoke
started coming from the car.
I immediately pulled off to the side of the road.
Heart Failure....I thought that the tranny was toast.
I sat along side Interstate 81until the tranny cooled down, then limped it
to the 1st exit.
I sat there for an hour, started it up again, and checked the tranny fluid
level.....still in the hash marks
The fluid must've bubbled out the filler tube and onto the exhaust.
I decided that the trip to NY was a no-go, and limped the car back to Pa via
Rt 11.
On the way back home, I kept the car at 45 mph (2200 rpm), and the light
never came back on.
The next day, I did a hr trip (just the car) to see if the light would come
back on....it didn't (whew !!)

Now, is this just coincidence that this is happening after the cam-job, or
is the tranny on the way out ??
Why would the tranny be running hotter than last summer...it was even a
relatively cool night to travel (Fri).
Yesterday, I ordered the tranny cooler package from Doug (FPS) to help keep
the tranny temp down.
One other thing...the car never got hot....didn't reach 1/2 way (radiator
temp).

Any imput would be greatly appreciated...sorry for the novel.

Thanks,
Stan Phillips
