FWIW, the plastic links started in '94.  My '93 had the old style metal ones
from the factory.

JVO, I'd just by the correct ones for the year of the car.  Depending on
where you shop, you may get plastic you may get metal.

All my GENII's have the plastic kind. My 90 had the Aluminum ones. then 
it had the steel ones with grease fittings. Now it has Aluminum with 
grease fittings again. I do like the plastic ones when parting a car the 
sawz all goes through them like butter,
