[Shotimes] ATX Questions (Time for my 4th tranny?)

Good points.

Also need to remember that there were a few variations on the basic AX4N
(same basic unit that the Gen 2 ATX used), and that there were various
upgrade pieces used in the trannies (like for the V8 Continental) but the
SHO got all of the "good stuff". There is a good probability that the local
shop will cut corners and not get all of the SHO "good stuff" in there.

The SHO ATX is one of those examples of "pay me now or pay me later". Get it
done right the first time.

FWIW, Frank Fox was at the Convention with his 314K-mile '93 ATX (which
still looks great for a black/black SHO!) and he is only on his 3rd tranny,
the last two being FPS trannies. And he does track events and the drags.

Jack:
I have 2 SHO's with the FPS built transmission. Both have around 65-70K
miles on the rebuild. I can not say enough good things about FPS's work! I
had them shipped to me and I installed both of them. Whatever you do make
sure you have the TransGo shift kit installed and try to get a
remanufactured 1995 year unit rather than a rebuild of your old unit. This
is a key point as the amount of upgrades and updates just from Ford are a
nice improvement by themselves. I paid $2200 for the FPS unit with a torque
converter and all of Doug L. tricks along with the TransGo shift kit.
I would NOT recommend having a local shop do it. I would NOT do anything
but a full rebuild/replacement. It's just too much labor to risk having to
pull it out again for some other problem. The price will be very close to
the FPS unit and it WILL NOT be correct. Just look at how many units have
been in your car so far? $1000 just to remove and replace seems way too high
but local conditions? I was quoted about $400-$500 to remove and replace
locally. Look around for a local independent garage. Also post where your
at, maybe a SHO guy is near by and could help out?
Get the rear main seal and carrier gasket replaced when the tranny is out.
Also the subframe bushings are a breeze to change now too! Any P/S leaks? It
is all hanging out in the open once the tranny is removed.

RUN LIKE HELL AWAY FROM THE SHO SHOP!!!!!!!
These people should have been out of business and in jail a LONG time
ago!!!!

.
If you install the FPS unit it will be the last transmission your car will
need!
