[Shotimes] ATX Questions (Time for my 4th tranny?)

Prolly the most important thing to have to do a tranny yourself is one of
those three bar engine supports. I've found with the ATX trannys that I have
swapped a $60 harborfreight tranny jack is also very very very helpful if
working on the floor on jackstands.

All in all an ATX SHO tranny isn't too bad to do, helps to get a second set
of hands to aid in lighning things up for the ri-install of the tranny, but
realistically that second set of hands is needed for about 15-20 minutes of
helping line the tranny up.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I should have mentioned where I'm at.
I'm in northern Michigan, close to Gaylord. Is anyone close by??

How hard of a job is it to replace the tranny myself? I'm pretty good with
cars but front drivers are intimidating to me, I've never pulled a FWD trans
or motor. I've done it many times on rear drivers though! Any special
tools needed?

I emailed FPS to ask a few questions about their unit. That sounds like the
way to go, if I can install it or get someone to install it. What are the
shifts like with the shift kit they use? If I'm going to fix this again I
want to be able to drive it like a SHO! After my last rebuild I was so
scared of the trans, it caught me at a bad time, so I babied the car for
years. The last year or 2 I started having fun with it again, but I very
seldom did WOT 1-2 because it seemed to grab real hard, but not in a good
way.

Thanks again
Jack

Good points.

Also need to remember that there were a few variations on the basic AX4N
(same basic unit that the Gen 2 ATX used), and that there were various
upgrade pieces used in the trannies (like for the V8 Continental) but the
SHO got all of the "good stuff". There is a good probability that the local
shop will cut corners and not get all of the SHO "good stuff" in there.

The SHO ATX is one of those examples of "pay me now or pay me later". Get it
done right the first time.

FWIW, Frank Fox was at the Convention with his 314K-mile '93 ATX (which
still looks great for a black/black SHO!) and he is only on his 3rd tranny,
the last two being FPS trannies. And he does track events and the drags.
