Have you checked the resistance of the wire?  That might tell you if it
really is bad.

If you're really desperate you can try this...   Years ago I had a spark
plug fail physically and damage a plug wire.  My local NAPA did not have
wires and when they told me the price for a set I decided I would look for
alternatives (since my dad's shop buys parts at wholesale).  The NAPA
salesman at the store mentioned that he had once wrapped a boot with
electrical tape for a temporary fix.  I put about 3 wraps of electrical tape
around the boot of my wire and it worked.  Actually it worked for a long
time.  I eventually got a new set of wires but the wrapped old wire was
still working fine.
