[Shotimes] stereo = sucky

I'm having a weird problem with my stereo. I changed the rear speakers
to 6x9 Pioneers (TSR-A6990s) and my bass completely disappeared. I've
swapped out headunits, I've swapped out amps, bass level doesn't change.
Now, and I fear this is the problem, but I don't have them mounted,
because I still haven't gotten done widening the stupid speaker cups to
fit them (they're huge). Does not mounting them to the frame and just
sitting them in the cup really make that much of a difference? Oh, and
the subwoofer's gone, too, but it was gone before I changed the rears
out, and there was still a medium amount of bass. Now it sounds like I
have like 3" speakers. It's really bad, and it's really soft, too. My
wife's car only has the premium sound and it sounds like there's a 10"
sub in the trunk (there isn't). What's the deal...? What am I doing wrong!?
Oh, and does anybody else have a problem with calper bracket to spindle
bolts randomly falling off? I've had two of them fall off in the past
week... isn't the torque spec like 60 ft.lbs?...
