Running it out of gas recently could also just be a coincidence and it could
be the crank sensor.

Could be the pump. Running out of gas will overheat
it.
Ford dealer is going to kill you with the price to
replace it. There is an easier way to replace it by
cutting a hole in the floor and doing it yourself but
keep in mind that you are assuming all risk and
responsibilty and that not everyone on the lists likes
this method. I can dig up the URL for the instructions
and send it over if you'd like.
