Mark;
I couldn't agree more.
Power is addictive! And absolute power addicts absolutely!
I spent 2 days rompin around in a '95 E36 M-3. Great car! Unflappable
handling, etc. Very smooth. Very SHO like but smaller and solid. But...Not
as powerful as I would like. And way too pricy for the performance. My 70
Z28 had much more bang for the buck. 425 HP 3400 lbs and 1.1 G cornering.
But too non-civilized for the street, and even at 8.1 lb/hp there is always
something faster at the track. And I sold it for:... -more power-
An LS1 is very civilized at 425 HP, and at 2800 lbs you'd be at 6.5 lb/hp. A
camaro would need 560hp to keep up. An M-3 clone would be beautifully
balanced, and streetable. And have close to the same performance as my
neighbors 560HP Cobra replica. But that thing's not civilized at all.
Your biggest problem would be controlling the wheelspin; and the permanent
grin!! My Z had 4-wheel steering (right foot) on the course and Hoosiers
were just about enough tire to be able to unleash it all in first.
My future plans include an all-out SCCA A-mod A-X car. Drove one once, WOAH!
1200 lb, ex-Formula Ford single seater chassis, 72 inch long wheelbase
(square), 300HP power, maybe an 8000 rpm SHO motor! 4.2 lb/hp. Can you say
top fuel car acceleration? 0-60 in 1.1. And 2.5 G turns!
I'll bet you or I could put one of these M-LS1 's together for $20-25k.
About what a GTO could cost, with 1/3 more power/wt, and more refined, and
more cool.
The only problem is: The SHO has about all the power you can use on the
street without getting seriously un-liscensed. (BTDT) You need a track to
really let more power than that loose. Would you track the BMW?
Go for it.
Lee
