I gave this some thought yesterday.  Many drivers throw stuff on their dashboard (driver's side).  If you cover the auto-lamp switch, no big deal - you will run around with your lights on.  If you cover your sunload sensor, the car may not think it needs to cool as hard as necessary, making things uncomfortable.  That's probably why they switched them.

Maybe it was a mistake corrected. It makes more sense that the Auto Lamp 
sensor should be on the left, near the headlamp switch and Auto Lamp 
control.

The Gen 2s are the opposite. That's odd that they would switch them around.
