Guess my question is that, if there are multiple gerunds, why does
disconnecting the single battery wire clear the PCM? Seems that wouldn't
work with multiple grounds. Car won't start/run with that wire disconnected,
either.

Actually both Ron and JVO are correct.  It takes that combination of grounds
to assure complete circuits.

I believe the ground is the little wire, with the connector, that goes to
the battery ground. Disconnecting that connector breaks the ground and
clears the PCM.
