Joseph,
There are a lot of different versions, but from reading many of them, I
have come to the conclusion that it would have made zero difference if
Ferrari had joined the other teams. The rules don't allow for the tire
change after qualifying.
Michelin is at fault here from what I can see, they have years of
experience with the track, and NO excuse for not having a viable backup
plan. They took a chance on a tire that it seems they knew was
marginal, but if it worked, they would have an advantage. they had a
slightly slower/safer tire they could have brought as a back up and that
would have solved everything, but they wanted to make the entire race
come back to them with compromises to suit their problems. As many have
mentioned, when Bridgestone has had a problem in the past, they haven't
boycotted the event, they adapted and made do.
But it also falls on the rules body/sanctioning body to do something to
make the race happen and that certainly could hav been done.
I agree, Nigels article for Autoweek is excellent and puts the blame
squrely where it should be. If anyone is remotely interested in what
happened, please read his article:

And thanks Joseph, for finding and posting the link.
