When you have the old plates in MI (like 1958 MI plates on a 1958 car), they
are registered just like regular plates, they just don't get a sticker every
year.

Dave,

Ok, I have already put out more info on Illinois plates than
most people ever would want to know, but here is more that
is like what you note below for your area.

In Illinois, IF you have regular or antique plates for your
antique vehicle, then you CAN put on and drive with any
vintage plate from the year of the vehicle.

For instance, I had antique plates (new ones) from Illinois
on my 1958 Impala that I used to have. I also bought at a
show a set of 1958 vintage Illinois plates. These are
legal. but I could NOT put on 1958 California plates!

I always thought that was a silly thing for them to allow,
because there was no way they could trace the license number
back to me.

You do have to carry your current registration and valid
Illinois new plates in the car, but you don't have to
display them at all.

Not many people, even those with old cars/trucks know about
this.
