[Shotimes] valve clearance questions

I did a set of +20s today. Ended up using mostly stock sizes. The
smallest was 2325 to get the cam on the tight end. Half of the rear
head was dead on the tight limit, .006 and .010, using the shims that
have been on the car for 120k. The worst was a change of .006". It's
hard to tell whether that is due to the stock cam, new cam, or valve
height.
I did have some trouble using the bucket depressor. After grinding some
on the inside of the hook, I was able to get the process to go nice and
smooth.

Ian (and anybody putting in these cams) after doing the 40's, I would do
things different. When you pull the cams out, put the thinnest shims in
you
have. This will make it easier to use the valve tools (it's much harder
with the reground base circles, shims and buckets bumped up with the
lash
caps, etc). Then, find the clearance with the thin shim, figure how
much up
you need to go,and drop in the correct size. Will be easier with
monkeying
around with the thicker ones and the valve tools. And you may find the
thin
ones may be close anyway...
the 20's may not be as bad as the 40's, but I'd still do it that way.

Actually between the base circle and shim, but yeah...same thing (you
want
the lobes pointed up)

I had to use really really thin stuff when I did the +40's, and that was
to
barely to keep them in range (they are on the tight end of spec). I
basically depleted my thin shim stash (2300 range) doing them. Things
may
be different with the 20s. I will say they are pretty consistant, so
the
grinder does a good job with that.
