Even if he cleaned & oiled the K&N that morning he drove all the way from
Livonia to the track (75-80 miles). He then did a handful of runs before
Dave tried it. It started cutting out on Dave on the track, but Dave drove
it back to the pits, and it was running. It was on the next restart where it
wouldn't idle.

Did it not start or was it just running poorly? If it didn't start, they lie
like dogs. Running like crap, I would still doubt it was the filter's
problem.

Anyway, how long has the K&N been in there and was it cleaned/oiled
recently? 

I can't see it starting to act up after you had already driven a bunch of
miles on it, even just looking at the mileage on that day!

As an update, Nissan looked at my car and blames my K&N for fouling up the
MAF.  Luckily they're going to weasel it onto my extended warranty.  The
part will come Tuesday/Wednesday, and I'm curious if that'll be the real
culprit or just an excuse.  K&N warranties against this type of thing,
dealerships bitch about it as a habit, and the SHO group haven't had
problems, so I'm curious what the outcome will be...
