I ended up removing it. Logging off, running norton's windoctor, and removed
all traces of google from the registry manually. Now it works fine again
after I re-instsalled it

Go figure.

The update yesterday just included the MS malware removal tool.  My gmail
notifier still works after running the MS download.  I have the google
version of the notifier there are other versions out there also.
