Following up...

The kind of drain plug installation typically performed for a tranny pan
uses an internally threaded adapter bolt that is inserted through a hole you
drill in the tranny pan, and then fixed in place by a nut on the outer side
of the pan. 

A small drain plug included with the adapter bolt is then screwed into the
adapter to complete the installation, as shown in attachment 1. With respect
to the attached photo titled "SLO pan from rear", the drain plug can be
placed from about as shown (midway between the 2nd and 3rd mounting hole in
the pan) to about even with the 3rd hole (slightly to the left of where
shown). 

With respect to the attached photo titled "SLO pan from side", the desired
offset from the edge of the pan is about 7/8'ths to 1 inch.
 
The above worked well enough on our now-derelict '89 Sable, but the drain
plug does project below the pan a little further than I'd like. So, genius
that I can be sometimes, I decided to get more creative and silver-braze a
nut on the inside of the pan so only the new drain plug would be seen on the
bottom of the pan. I still think it was a reasonably good idea but I
executed it poorly and damaged the pan in the vicinity of the new hole. It
could be fixed, I suppose, but I'd rather not be reminded of my mistake each
time I drain the oil.
