Joseph,

I would have used a stainless steel plug before using a brass one in an
aluminum case.  Two soft metals will often gall when you disassemble them.

Thanks to Ken Epperly for suggesting a #6 extractor to remove the MTX fill 
plug.

For the replacement, I used a brass plug from the plumbing department, 1/2''

male pipe thread with square head.  No more recessed plug for me.
