I'll give that a shot and we'll see what happens.
Hoping for the best here. An email from Al Fitz suggested that I might be
looking at something more serious like the beginning of a head gasket leak,
which I'd hate to have to contend with.

Flush it out, and replace the thermostat while you're
at it. Cheap and easy. May or may not solve your
problem, but its an simple thing to get out of the
way...
