Just a piece of wire to short out the contacts.

  You know, I don't have anything to do this with, though I'm told you can get
readers at most auto parts stores pretty cheaply. These things come with code
keys, right?

  In any case, the weird thing is that I had this problem happen to me again
this morning for just a spell; it got a little rough, so I checked, and the
temp gauge was a bit higher than usual. Then, right before my eyes, the needle
dropped down to its usual spot and everything ran fine again.

  Your suggestion is a good one, I think. My personal suspicion is that
there's something happening with either the thermostat or some piece of
electronics here, but I thought I'd canvas other SHO drivers for their
expertise as well.

   Do you know how to get the trouble codes from the computer? If the check
engine light has come on, you should have some codes in memory. . .
