I was changing the fuel filter underneath a VW van once.  Sure, a  little gas 
will probably run out the tank-side hose when I d/c the filter (even  though 
I pinch the hose), for a second before I jam a golf tee into the end of  it!  
No big deal.  I was off to the side so the gas wouldn't come  close to my face.
 
Unfortunately when I removed the filter, I was pinching the hose with my  
left hand and some gas ran down my left arm.  Being that I was jammed  underneath 
the van, my left ear was right up against my shoulder.  You  guessed it, the 
gas ran straight into my ear.  Believe me, you don't EVER  want that to 
happen.  Even constantly flushing it with water, it  was basically the most 
unpleasant half hour I ever spent.  If I had  thought tearing off my own head would 
make it feel better, I probably would  have.
