Also try looking at the collapsable section of the steering column.

Get yourself plenty of light in the foot well and look closely at the collapsable section as you move the steering wheel from side to side a bit.

There is a smaller squarelike shaft inside another slightly bigger squarelike shaft.  See how these two shafts move together, or not, as you move the SW from side to side.

Mine had quite a bit of play in it.  I stuffed some spacing material in there (two safety clips I believe and then tightened them in place with an small adjustable clamp).
