[Shotimes] Loose Steering Rack

Would it be possible to heat up the larger shaft with a torch until it is glowing and then compress it slightly with a set of pliers while monitoring the slack as you move the SW side to side?

One would have to be careful with the torch in there in the footwell though. Easy to accidentally burn wires that are to far away from the shaft.

Obviously, if there are wires routed inside of the shaft, then this should not be attempted without first removing those wires. But I don't think there are any wires inside, is there?
