There's also the very real possibility that the gauge no longer works
properly.

For nearly forever, Ford has really only used two oil sending units. One for
an idiot light and one for factory gauges. The idiot light sender is about
the diameter of a quarter and maybe 1/2 inch thick with a 10/32 stud for the
wire. The other, and maybe the one you tried? Is about 2 inches in diameter
and maybe 3 inches long with the 10/32 stud. That sender (for gauges) has
been used for a long time. Am I correct that the Police Taurus used the 3.8L
engine? How about looking at the senders for TBird and Aerostar since both
of those also used the 3.8? Maybe that would help.
