This is the traditional method for dealing with studs, but you normally can't use a socket wrench.  For removing studs you want to apply torque to the nut that is closest to the manifold, meaning you probably have to use a wrench and not a socket.  Heat will help, as will lots of penetrating oil.  Sometimes you have to turn the stud back and forth, a little bit at a time, each time maybe turning it further out.
