The discussion of the Car Craft article posted over a week ago elucidated much discussion on the Hillman list.

Here's one of the samples...

Keith,

http://www.pumaracing.co.uk/flywheel.htm has a good dose of mathematical
physics to explain it in detail.
About 3/4 of the way down is an amusing story about an ignoramus who wrecked
his flywheel on the lathe.

You also mentioned using a lathe to remove excess weight.
Is that how it's usually done with car engines?
Old BMW and Moto Guzzi motorcycle flywheels were lightened by drilling:

http://www.guzzitech.com/Flywheelz-ed.html
I guess the main concern is to avoid the clutch contact area.
1976 AMA Superbike champion Reg Pridmore later wrote a "Performance" chapter
for the BMW Clymer workshop manual:
"In stock configuration, the flywheel weighs approximately 10 pounds. For
street use, it may be cut down almost 50% in weight, to 5.2 - 5.3 pounds."
(He also recommended some engineering companies who knew how to do it
properly).

Brian.
