[Shotimes] Rear proportioning valve??

Hi All,
Just got done replacing both brake lines running from the front to the
proportioning valve in the rear. 10 years in Michigan really took it's
toll on the lines. Yesterday morning I slammed the brakes real hard to
avoid a deer, ABS kicked in and a few seconds later the pedal went to
the floor. I had basically no brakes. Upon investigation one of the
rusty lines gave way, fluid was gushing out!
Replacing the lines went simple enough, everything seems to be working
fine and leak free.
Question about the proportioning valve. It's connected to the rear
suspension arm. The way mine was connected it didn't really look like
it would do much of anything, I'm not sure how it's supposed to look but
mine was really rusty and looks like it may have pulled through the
mount. The rod was really loose, i couldn't see how it would activate
the valve.
So, I left the rod off when I reassembled. Not sure though if this is a
good thing to do but, not knowing how it is supposed to function, I
didn't know how to reattach the rod.
Can anyone comment on what the purpose of this valve is, how it is
supposed to attach to the suspension arm and how do I adjust it?
I see no ill iffects right now with it being disconnected, to me braking
is normal. That;s not to say it hasn't been messed up for a long time
and I'm just used to incorrect braking!
Thanks!
Jack
