In my vast experience with dying batteries--I've gone through 3 under warranty with Sears in the last 3 years (two gold Die Hards and one Red Top Optima), that developed dead cells and now Sears won't sell to me any more (they didn't have another Red Top Optima to replace the dead one anyway!), I would suggest NOT judging the tach's behavior until I was sure the electrical system was at 100%. I noticed all kinds of weird actions with the lights--most noteable the ABS light coming on--that all were fine once the electrical system was proven to be 100%. You can't run an engine and all the accessories we have on an alternator alone and if that alternator isn't putting out 100% it is even worse.
Just my opinion and YMMV.

Would a low battery(5.49 amp)make the tach go nuts?Like move to 4k while starting.
