I must be missing something. If she uses broadband to log into their network, this is with either DSLor cable modem. If it's DSL on a phone line, it does NOT tie up the line. That only happens if you dial in. We have had one phone line with DSL for almost 4 years now.
 
With our basic SBC landline phone 99% ofthe usage is for incoming calls. Outbound calls are only to a local pizza place and a local restaurant. Cell phones handle the rest.
 
I don't even know if there are any local-area-only cell phone plans left. The basic Verizon cell plan is $40 for 400 minutes with unlimited nights & weekends, as well as unlimited Verizon-to-Verizon-cellphone calls.
 
If she dials out all day, use that as the business phone (and a write-off), and eaach of you can get a cell to use as your "real" number.
 
For what she needs for a phone, the Vonage VPN phone would be a disaster. it is not as reliable as POTS.

pay $40 or $50 dollars a month for a regular cell phone plan on top of my
home phone charges.
The Verizon Freedom Plan, which has unlimited long distance, is about $55 a
month. Supposedly, the Vonage unlimited plan is less than $30. I was
thinking Vonage plus a second line - either Vonage or Verizon standard
service - would be about the same price, and we'd always have a phone line
available. I know about the 911 thing. They supposedly are addressing that,
but who knows when it will be available in my area. We don't have too many
options. I thought I'd check tham all out.
