[Shotimes] timing sprockets not fitting crank

Ian;
The one on my 94 and the 89 crate engine slid on/off, where my original 89
SHO had to be pulled/tappped. The tapping shouldn't be that hard. Like
George said it should slide 1/4 in. or so per tap. Watch for burrs or
slivers as you do this.
If the tapping has to be too hard, something is wrong.
Check for rust, and clean / polish mating surfaces. Emory paper is perfect.
Check the key closely for being square with the crank, low enough, and
especially burrs from assembly. Remove burrs with a small flat file. Measure
the width & height of the key and the keyhole in the pulley, with a caliper
or micrometer. Same size, or less than .001 " interference fit.
If you are still suspicious remove the key and make sure the pulley fits
the crank without the key.
They key is much softer than the crank, actually pretty malleable metal. Can
be straightened, resquared, etc, with a hammer and an anvil or flat surface.
Check for burrs around the keyhole.
Check the crank snout for flatness with a metal ruler straightedge and a
feeler guage.
One of the above should help.
