I think it is a length issue.  Seems like Gen 2 rear struts are a bit longer than
Gen 1, or at least the tab for the pinch bolt is in a slightly different place.

I put Gen 1 rear Tokikos on a couple of Gen 2 cars a while back, and they turned out
fine.

You can easily adjust the height of the rear of a Gen 1/Gen 2 away from stock very
easily, to compensate for tired springs, or to raise it up or lower it for personal
preference.  You just slide the strut up or down in the knuckle, and drill a hole
for the pinch bolt to go through the tab if it is in the way.  There is no CV joint
to get in the way of lowering the car, so your wish is your command.
