The clutch changeout on the 89 went pretty well today. Hopefully, I did it
correctly and it will last awhile. I took out a HDPP with bent fingers and
a partly worn Fibertuff disc and put in a SPEC Stage 3 PP and ceramic
clutch. The HDPP and the SPEC PP were identical Valeo units. The SHO Shop
flywheel insert looked fine and still had a machining pattern on it, so I
just roughed it up a little with some sandpaper. The Fidanza insert I
bought was the same size as the SHO Shop insert, but had a slightly
different bolt pattern. I also left the ceramic TOB in place since I didn't
see anything wrong there. It took four hours to complete using a two post
lift and another set of hands when I dropped the subframe. One thing that I
almost screwed up was a sensor on the top of the trans; it wanted to hit the
unibody when I dropped the trans down and when I was putting it back up.
There was a small oil leak, that I was unable to identify the source of.
The inside of the bell housing was oily, but the flywheel and PP were
completely dry. I think that would make it a transmission seal. The fluid
did not appear to be red however. Perhaps the clutch dust had turned it
brown.
