Exaaactly. Where we lived in Toledo, we were about 1/4 mile from the Jeep
plant. Very blue-collar neighborhood. Mosy houses were in the 60k-80k range.
You saw plenty of 40k Suburbans in driveways. Of course, the wife had a new
car too. Maybe a boat and/or camper. Kids had scooters. Big screen TV's
glowing in the windows. All the good stuff. When the overtime dried up,
there were plenty of For Sale signs on everything, and the local paper
always ran articles on all of the bankruptcy filings.
Now here in York county, the housing market is booming for a different
reason. Lots of people are moving here from too-expensive-to-live-in-anymore
Maryland and Philadelphia. When we first came out here last year to look
around we heard lots of stories about bidding wars for houses. It scared the
heck out of us. That's one of the reasons we decided to build. (I'd think
twice about it again though) We got twice the size house as we had in Toledo
for about twice what we sold our house in Toledo for. I'd say we have a
pretty good value factor. Prices continue to go up, although not as fast as
last year.
