I have a 2005 M6 GTO and stay up on the boards. What we have found out since the cars have come out:
The A4s were rated faster than the M6 in 0-60 by .1 or .2 secs real world neither has the edge
The M6 cars are faster in the 1/4 mile
Real world everyone loves his or her choice A4 vs M6 there has been no clear winner in day to day driving.
The GTO is like the SHO it is not a 1/4 mile car. The rear axle is the weak link
The 2005s have electronic throttle control. When you smack open the pedal the throttle body will not respond like it was conected via a cable. The throttle opens according to a preset table in the computer. This was done to reduce warranty claims. Aftermarket tuners are developing reprogram kits as we speak. This also affects WOT shifts with the M6 Owners report the car laying down if they do not lift at shift. Faster times are obtained by lifting at shift. Again aftermarket programs will eliminate this.
The A4s have additional toque management (not traction control) that can take torque out of the motor depending on the situation. This was done to reduce warranty claims on the transmission. Aftermarket tuners are working on this but it is proving difficult as it is an intregal part of the logic of both the motor and the trans.
If you are considering a GTO drive both before ordering. I use mine occasionaly and the M6 is fine for me. I have a friend who commutes in his in Atalnta so he bought an A4. He was surprised at the power in the A4 and feels he did not lose a thing. He has had other muscle cars where the difference between auto and manual was very noticeable and was expecting the same with the GTO but was very pleasantly surprised. Almost all A4 owners reoprt the same.
The best board for the new GTO can be found at http://www.ls1gto.com/forums/
Hope this helps,
