Here's a post from Louis Grande, from March of 2004:

JvO,

I think Tim is right on here. The cost of parts will be about the same and,
if any leaks develop down the line, the relatives on a budget will thank you
for the much cheaper refrigerant available at Wal-Mart. Check out ebay as
well for ac condensor and compressors.

Here's a few places to shop around http://a-aironline.com/

and some tips http://www.firstfives.org/faq/AC/ac_charge.html

If you are planning to do the entire project yourself, shop ebay for a set
of a/c gauges and check harbor freight as well. Not the best tools there but
they'll do the job. Just be sure to get the gauge set for the 134a
refrigerant. There is also a cheap evacuation unit (forgot the actual name)
at HF to draw a vacuum through the ac system that gets hooked up to an air
compressor. Get the proper compressor that will move the correct psi. Not
the max but the average operating psi. You can always rent one for a day at
Home Depot.

Good luck.
