Doing head gaskets on a 3.8L... When we got the rear head off, it was
clear the HG failure had been at cylinder #6 ... puddle of coolant on the
piston but nicely de-carboned. All other cylinders look normal.
Tomorrow we begin re-assembly. Thanks for the tips about spraying the new
HGs. We plan to lube and re-use the head bolts, this is an economy job on a
93 Taurus with over 100K so the tranny can't last forever. Any tips on
re-using or tightening the head bolts? What sort of lube to use? Just
spray lube? Would it be wrong to apply silver anti-sieze to head bolts?
One snapped or rounded bolt head and we'd have been screwed, but we had good
fortune in that regard. We decided that the church needs to name a patron
saint of rusted fasteners. You know, someone to whom you could direct that
prayer that you say inside just as you begin to apply torque to a rusty
bolt. Saint Rustolius, or Saint Rusty for short. George and Alan, you'll
just have to take my word on this. You too Kerbster.
