Yeah, if you made note of where the vacuum hose nipple on that thingy was  
pointed at, you could usually drop it back in close enough to get it to  fire.
 
Of course in retrospect, the received wisdom is to scribe a line across the  
joint between the distributor housing and the hole in the block before 
removing  said distributor.  That pretty well nails down the orientation   ;-) 
 
Generally speaking nowadays, with most folks having PCs and digicams, it  
never hurts to take a bunch of close up shots before and while tearing  into a 
job.  It's saved the skin of my ass more than  once.  Didn't have that 
particular memory aid back in the  day!
