The charger was defnitely meant to harken back to the original.  When it first came out, one of the big things they talked about was the "fender kick" that the car has at the rear doors.

Actually, the Charger was always 'bigger' than the Challenger. The 
Challenger was in the same class as the Mustang and the Camaro. The Charger 
was more of an Impala or Galaxy sized car.

I'm on the fence with regards to the Charger being a four door. I feel, as a 
bigger car, that the four doors allow folks to utilize the size much better 
than if it were two doors. No, it's not following the tradition of the old 
Charger. But I don't think Dodge ever meant for the Charger to be 'retro'. I 
would like to see the car in a two door, but frankly if I were buying a 
Charger I think I'd opt for the sedan.
