Replacing alternators, I think, is one of the easiest jobs on the SHO.
With some practice, it can be done in under 20 minutes.
First, you have to take the battery out and take the battery tray off.
That's three 8 or 10mm bolts, one on top, two on the side... but you
don't really have to get this off if you can't. Next, take (I think) a
15mm socket and torque down the drive belt tensioner (right in front
[car-wise] of the power steering pump on the top) clockwise to release
tension on the accessory belt. This can be painful on the knuckles if
you couldn't get the battery tray off. Take the belt off. Release the
tensioner (carefully). After that, it's simple. You can see three of the
bolts on the corners, and a fourth one faces the front of the car. Don't
forget to take the B+ terminal off the alternator, that's the really
thick wire held on by a nut, and unplug the electrical connector as
well. That's it... the alternator's out. Installation is pretty much
reverse of removal.
Keep in mind it's been a little while since I've done this, and I'm in
the middle of the Persian Gulf in an aircraft carrier so I don't have
any handy visual references :)

Subject: [Shotimes] ATX Alternator, is it a PITA?
Hi All,
The 95 ATX is begging for my attention today, in the form of a bad
alternator. It's whining like crazy (similar to how I whined when I
heard a new one is $175) and putting out next to nothing as far as amps
go.
How hard is it to replace on these cars? If I remember right it is
right in front next to the battery, but I never really looked to see
where the bolts are.
Is it a pain or will it be smooth sailing?
Thanks
Jack
