My experience is with a Yamaha RX V 595 that I have had for several years. It has been totally reliable and sounds great with my Boston Acoustics towers, center, powered sub and ceiling mounted surround speakers (5.1). I like the automatic switching between DTS, DD and Dolby Surround for each input. The only thing I wish it had were more inputs. It only has one coax and two optical inputs for digital sound and one extra set of line inputs. I'm pretty sure the newer ones have more. 
   
  When I replace it, I will want a receiver with HDMI upconversion, so I can just run one cable to the DVI input on my HDTV but all of the receivers I see with that are $1K+.
