I'm not sure if this made it out on the list the first time, I found a
reject notification this morning....
I think I am confused....
The car dies on the highway, and the temp gauge is not off the chart
right? The oil light comes on, but that's normal if the engine dies,
or even if the RPM gets real low. If you don't step on the clutch the
engine will continue to turn on the momentum of the car obviously.
So Clarfication 1: Did the car overheat or just die? If the temp
was normal then it didn't overheat.
I speculate that the engine just died - like a CPS or fuel pump. You
said yourself the temp was not that high, so why do you say it
overheated? i see that you were driving the car and the enine stopped
running.
Now you said "The engine doesn't crank but wants to" What exactly do
you mean? When you turn the key is the engine rotating under the
power of the starter motor? Does it sound like it normally does when
you turn the key, but just not start? Or when you turn the key do you
hear nothing or just a click?
So Clarification 2: Can the starter rotate the engine like it should
when you turn the key? In other words is the motor stuck or does it
rotate?
It sounds like you are saying yes, it cranks but does not start. Ok,
then step 0, not even one, should be to pull the EEC codes and see
what it says. Follow the instructions on the shotimes.com site. If
it has no plausible codes, or sounds weird when you crank the motor
then lets talk about a compression check.
Clarification 3 is merely terminology. the covers on the heads are
known as valve covers, and the corresponding gaskets are valve cover
gaskets. That's a lot different than a head gasket. A head gasket
seals the block to the head, and not the head to the valvecover. I
scratched my head a few minutes and finally figured out what was going
on.
So my approach:
1, stopping tearing the valvecovers off, there's nothing to see there.
2, pull the EEC codes
3, come back to us with some more details.
