You should have much more fun in dry weather.
Hold your hand kinda near the front wheel and feel for excessive heat &
smells there, pretty likely with stock 89 brakes. If you could almost roast
marshmellows, they're too hot, and they would stink.
The real "trick" in auto-cross is to keep the tires at maximum load in the
corner. That means going in & coming out too. Turn the steering wheel
(smoothly) as you roll off the brakes. Roll off the brakes as you roll on
the steering angle. Pretend the two are connected and do both at once, one
gets more pressure while the other gets less. (Same for corner exit). If you
ask the front tires to do both max turning and braking at once you'll be
telling us it understeers like a pig! My "Jackie Stewart" tip is to let the
front hood drop 3 inches on the brakes, then try to keep it down that 3
inches as you gradually transition to full steering, (roll it around,) till
the right side is now leaning down 3 inches. Jackie did it so smoothly the
orange didn't roll out of the punch bowl he had taped to the hood!! It
followed the rim.
