Greetings Gentlemen
As many of you know there are several books dedicated to single malts.
Michael Jackson (not the wacko with the one white glove) has a good book
describing dozens of the varieties of single malts. Some call it the bible.
I think it is a good start to help one learn more.
15 years ago I gathered 10 interesting gents together to try a rare single
malt. We audaciously named ourselves 'The Sons of Scotland Single Malt
Whiskey Society' At that time one could only get a handful of different
malts so most were rare. We have been meeting monthly ever since except in
the summer which are known as the months of darkness. Most of the members
travel frequently and bring home varieties of single malt not available
locally. As a result I have had the pleasure of sampling a many wee dram of
whiskey. This year we ventured forth and purchased a barrel of whiskey from
the Bruichladdich distillery on the Isle of Islay. It will be ours to sample
in 12-15 years.
A humerous aside;
A recent headline in the Newcastle Daily Star News states "Weapon of Malt
Destruction". (placed just above an extremely busty photo of Pamela Anderson
with gossipy subtext and right beside an extremely toothy photo of Julia
Roberts with gossipy subtext)
The story tells that "bungling American spies have been keeping tabs on the
Bruichladdich whisky distillery because they thought it was a base for
international terrorists and a production facility for deadly chemical
weapons. The CIA reportedly dispatched agents to the island. As well the US
Defense Threat Reduction Agency had tapped into the distillery's webcam and
security cams. The CIA and the DTRA have not denied the story."
Anyway back to single malts. I think the best value for a good single malt
is Balvenie 12 year old but if money were no object I'd be sipping 25 year
old Springbank. Its like a wee Angel pissin on your tongue.
At my house though you will always find a bottle of Oban whether it be a 12
or 17 year old or one of the 'new' cherry and port cask distillations. For
me there is nothing more cathartic than spending time in the garage working
on an old car and sipping a fine 17 year old.
