[Spits] Overdrive switch

A friend and I are rebuilding a 1973 GT6. Acording to one manual the overdrive switch is on the shifter, (this is a late model car), and another says that the switch is on the column? We added the overdrive from a MKII so all we have is the column mounted switch, if it indeed belongs on the shifter than we need a different shifter than we have. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
