True David, but I find it useful in very tight and slow maneuvers to
downshift early so that I can get on the horses quicker. My admittedly limit
track experience (60s - Europe) is that engines last a lot longer than
brakes so where you can slow up with a downshift you are saving some brake
linings providing you have a good clutch.
