Could very well be the wrong fork lever. Did that have a 1098 clutch in it
before, and a 1275 in it now?

There are some different fork levers. Paul A knows what's what.

So it sounds as if the travel of the piston is in  the right range. That 
would leave slop in the pivot, bent arm, wrong arm  for the application, 
bad/worn throwout, defective cover, and other worn  parts as logical 
suspects.
