Frank,
A starter solenoid is a relay.  Why it is called a solenoid instead of a
relay, who knows?  Maybe because some starters have a combo relay/solenoid
that both makes the electrical connection and moves the starter gear into
mesh.  But a relay just lets a small current control a big current device.
Some cars have a remote mechanical starter switch, which isn't a relay.
