Sounds like the voltage regulator is old. In the reg. built into the
alternator. If so, get it tested. Most auto parts stores are set up for this
now. Connections are very cheap to check and clean; will give you time to
think about your next step.
Is the 17 volts FROM the battery or of the voltage the alt is putting into
the battery? You might see 17-volts with the leads not connected to the
battery but not across the battery terminals with the alt connected. This
would show itself as boiling of the battery fluids. ...bill in oregon

Subject: [Spridgets] Alternator

My alternator light is blinking on and off even at medium RPM's. What
should I be looking for?
1. Bad wiring?
2. Old pulley on new generator too large. Is the difference in size
between old (generator) and new (alternator) pulley enough to matter?
3. Brand new alternator is bad. My multimeter is reading 17V from the
battery alone, so I have to get a new one.
