Run a clean, separate ground to the tach housing, that little ground on 
the knurled nut just doesn't cut it after 40 years.
If it is really off on the rpms, it may need to be adjusted.
Do this by removing the tach from the dash, remove the guts from the 
housing, hook up the wires and a GOOD GROUND, you will see a red, 
yellow, or white adjustable potentiometer, looks like a little capacitor 
with a slotted spot for a screw driver.
S l o w l y turn that slot with a screw driver and set it using a 
tach/dwell gauge or if you want it to reed 8,000 rpms at 45 mph, you can 
do that too ;) A trick is to drill a 3/8 hole in the back of the housing 
in line with the adj pot and now you can fiddle with it while it's 
installed in the car.
