Frank- it sounds like the answer lies in the fact that there is more
resistance in the turn signal circuit than in the parking light circuit.
Electricity is like water- It likes the path of least resistance (like some
people I know). Try hooking the power to the turn signal relay to the ignition
(so the signals will work when the ignition is on) with a jumper temporarily.
If it doesn't make the engine die when they are on (it shouldn't pull THAT
much power) then you should be golden. Otherwise, try switching out the
flasher unit for a non-heavy duty one. The heavy duty flashers use a stronger
electromagnet and spring setup that pulls more amps.  Here's hoping..
