Lake Pipes, came out from underneath the car, back of the front wheel wells.
They extended along the side of the car and stopped just forward of the rear
wheel wells. They had covers over these pipes held in place by two bolts.
You'd open then up by taking out one of the bolts and the blocking plate
would rotate away from the exhaust opening. Allowed you to drive to the salt
lake, then open them up to run. ...bill

Exhaust cutouts can take many other forms; most hidden and operated while
running.
